Saturday Prologue Ride

This year’s Ride The Rockies Prologue ride takes riders from Copper Mountain to Leadville, the highest city in North America. We will ride up Fremont pass, named after the famous explorer John Fremont who discovered the area in the 1840’s. At the top of pass enjoy a well stocked aid station near the Climax mine. This mine at one time produced 75% of the worlds molybdenum and was the largest underground mine in the world. We then descend into North America’s highest city, Leadville.

Settled in 1859 Leadville was one of America’s most wild and prosperous mining towns. By the 1880’s it was Colorado’s second most populated city with more than 14,000 people. Famous people like Horace Tabor (Tabor Opera house still stands), Doc Holliday, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, all lived here at one time or another. Fortunes were made and lost but downtown Leadville still allows your imagination to wander with many original buildings still in place.

With views of several 14,000 foot peaks, the ride into Leadville is stunning. You will see mountains you will be riding through in the coming days. We will be having lunch at a local favorite spot and depending on weather, we may dine outside to soak in the Rocky Mountain Sunshine.

Take time in Leadville to look around at the living history and local shops before returning to Copper Mountain for a VIP dinner and guest presentation by Scott Mercier. Scott, a Colorado native is an Olympian, former Postal Team Rider and recent publisher of the book Win True. Scott grew up in Telluride, a similar town as Leadville with a rich mining history. He will offer some great stories from his time as a pro cyclist, but also his time as a kid growing up in the mountains and how he became a professional cyclist from such an unlikely place. Scott will be riding with you to Leadville and the next day to Glenwood.  As part of the Prologue you will receive a signed copy of Scott’s new book.

Our second guest speaker found his love of cycling at Ride The Rockies as a para-cyclists. Mike Murphy represented Fort Carson in the Army Trials and Warrior Games, and recently just returned from representing the United States at the Invictus Games.  He won 4 medals (gold in TT tandem cycling, gold in road race tandem cycling, gold in 1500m track, and silver in 50m breastroke) and won the Exceptional Performance Award presented by Prince Harry and Jagua
